Council of Rectors discusses further steps to establish a world-level research and education center

The meeting took place on 11th November.

Vice-Rector of KFU Marat Safiullin familiarized everyone with the existing concept of world-level centers (WLRECs). Among the target indicators are – new competitive technologies, revenues from services, ratio of new and improved products, number of created jobs, number of patents, publications in global databases, ratio of young employees, ratio of overseas students, and some others.

Kazan Federal University is proposed as the core institution of a Tatarstan’s WLREC. The suggested priorities are petroleum industry, biomedicine, pharmaceutics, humanities and teacher education.

“I want to emphasize that these proposals are just an outline by our university. A federal subject must initiate such a project. We have to jointly prepare materials, so, if some suggestions have not yet made it to this presentation, we need to include them. I’d like to ask you to organize workgroups and arrange discussions. It’s important to stimulate diversification of local industry,” said Rector of KFU Ilshat Gafurov, Chairman of the Council of Rectors.

Minister of Education and Science of Tatarstan Rafis Burganov offered to conduct such a discussion at KFU in the nearest future. All Tatarstani universities should submit their thoughts till the end of this week.

The Council also talked about university digitization strategies and measures to support talented young people.

In conclusion, the attendants unanimously voted to recommend Ilshat Gafurov for a next term as Rector of Kazan Federal University. The decision should be made by the Government of Russia in April 2020.
