Rector Ilshat Gafurov attended the talks on 24th October in Moscow.

‘I invited you to talk about how to improve university life, how to work on the topic of our universities’ competitiveness, to make them recognized in the whole world, to make our education prestigious, popular, and most importantly, of high quality,’ said the Prime Minister.

Vice-Premier Tatiana Golikova, Minister of Science and Higher Education Mikhail Kotyukov, President of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alexander Sergeev, relevant experts and rectors of the Project 5-100 universities were present.

‘We have the strongest positions in subject rankings – and that’s natural, - particularly in mathematics, physics, computer sciences, informatics, and engineering. Those are the fields where we have been historically dynamic and where we have a good background,’ noted Mr. Medvedev.

Kazan University has shown one of the best ascents in the rankings. It’s currently represented in 57 various categories, after starting from only 8 in 2013.

As for the nearest goals, according to a President’s decree, Russia should be in the top five in R&D and in the top 10 nations in global rankings by 2024. Currently, the country is 17th in the latter.

Project 5-100 will continue and will cover more universities – 30 instead of the current 21.

Other questions were also raised at the roundtable. In particular, the universities asked to remove some legal hindrances in order to arrange more robust cooperation with the industry.
