Delegation of Centro de Investigaciones del Petróleo (Cuba)

The team is headed by General Director Amilcar Fierro Ruiz de Ugarrio.

CEINPET is a research subsidiary of Cuba Petroleum (Cupet), a longtime partner of Kazan Federal University.

On the first day of their visit, 23rd September, the guests toured the Institute of Geology and Petroleum Technologies (IGPT), the Institute of Chemistry, and the History Museum.

Research prospects were discussed with Vice-Rector Danis Nurgaliev. In November 2019, catalysts for steam-assisted gravity drainage will be tested at Boca de Jaruco oilfield.

Cupet and KFU have been partners since 2016. In that timeframe, Cupet employees have already graduated from a master course in petroleum business. In 2018, IGPT signed another contract, the biggest in the University’s history, to teach 200 Cupet managers. 140 of them have been educated so far. KFU is ready to prolong the program for 2020 and 2021.

“The existing productive and mutually beneficial cooperation between Kazan University and Cupet in education was a stimulus to also launch joint work in science. We’ve heard about your research from our colleagues and want to implement it in Cuba,” said Mr. Ugarrio.

Cuba is rich in heavy oils, so it may find use in in-situ combustion, binary mixtures, and other technologies researched at KFU. Offshore oil is also of great interest to the Cuban partners.

During the week, the guests will be visiting labs engaged in petroleum extraction and petroleum chemistry, and meeting major partners in this area, such as Rosneft, TNG Group, and and Bashneftegeofizika.
