First international PhD degree conferred at the Institute of Psychology and Education

The inaugural degree holder is Ruth Ilesanmi, a Nigerian national.

She worked under Professor Leonid Popov’s guidance for six years and successfully presented her thesis at Saint-Petersburg University on 11th September. The research is titled ‘Intellectual and personality peculiarities of the child with different styles of "parent - child" relationship in complete and incomplete families (using samples of children in Russia and Nigeria).’

The thesis itself was submitted both in English and Russian languages, and the presentation was conducted in English. The panel, unlike usually in Russia, comprised only seven experts, three of whom represented SPbSU, three were from other Russian universities, and one was an overseas academic.

After a lively discussion, the panel decided to bestow the PhD degree upon Ms. Ilesanmi. For her research consultant, Dr.Popov, it’s a 46th successful thesis defense, which is one the highest figures for Kazan University employees.

According to the existing equivalence criteria, PhD is recognized as analogous to the Russian Candidate of Science (Kandidat Nauk) degree. There is also a higher Doctor of Science (Doktor Nauk) degree, which doesn’t have a direct equivalent outside the Russian-speaking world.
