1st International Conference 'Russia-Japan: Politics, History and Culture'

The forum takes up 1st – 3rd November.

Guests from Japan include Head of the Office of Japanese Culture at Japan Foundation Takahashi Masakazu, Advisor on Japan and APAC at Association of Industrial Parks Iwao Ohashi, Director of the Japanese Center for Trade and Economic Cooperation Hamano Michihiro, and others.

Japanese studies are a relatively new area for Kazan Federal University. Teaching of Japanese as a foreign language started here in 2008, and the number of learners is now 250. However, cooperation with Japanese scientists has a longer history, and there are currently 11 partner institutions there.

The Center for Japanese Studies was established at KFU in 2011. Japanese language teachers are dispatched every year to work here. The Center holds many education, cultural and research events. In 2014, KFU joined an academic cooperation project titled “Japan – Tatar World”, supported by the Institute of History of the Tatarstan Academy of Sciences and involving KFU institutes.

This new conference aims to boost Japanese studies and attract more researchers to this area. The forum is co-organized by the Ministry of Culture of Tatarstan, Kazan Federal University, Japan Foundation, and Tatarstan-Japan Culture and Information Center “Sakura”.
