25 September 2018
Cooperation agreement signed by Kazan University and International Association for Mongolian Studies

The signing was held as a part of the 1st Kovalevsky Readings.

The inaugural Kovalevsky Readings (24th – 26th September 2018) are meant to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Oriental Studies in Russia and 185 years of the establishment of the Department of Mongolian Language at Kazan University. Osip Kovalevsky, to whom event is dedicated, was the first chair of the department which opened in 1833 and closed in 1855.

Efforts are made to restore some of the good traditions. Just last year, KFU and the Mongolian Academy of Sciences signed a cooperation agreement as well. Joint research has already taken place at the remains of Ordu Baliq, the capital of the Uyghur Khaganate.

As Ramil Khayrutdinov, Director of the Institute of International Relations, noted, Kovalevsky Readings must lay the groundwork for further development of Mongolian studies, academic mobility, and bilateral relations. Mongolian colleagues have arrived from the Institute of History and Archaeology and the Institute of Language and Literature of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences, as well as from a number of universities. Institute of Oriental Manuscripts (Russian Academy of Sciences) is a co-organizer.
