14th and 15th September – Kazan University and Rusfond launch first next-generation sequencing lab in Russia

The laboratory will be essential for the National Bone Marrow Donor Registry, a joint project by KFU and Rusfond charity foundation. Up to 25 thousand donors can be inducted in the database in 2019.

With his new equipment, one HLA typing job cost can be reduced from 14 thousand to 7 thousand rubles. KFU Institute of Fundamental Medicine and Biology will be in charge of databases for the whole Volga District.

On Saturday, 15th September, the University, Government of Tatarstan, and local volunteers held a charity even called “Prevailing over cancer together.” 166 KFU employees and students joined the bone marrow donor registry. The registry was named after Vasily Perevoschikov, a boy who died while waiting for a bone marrow transplant.

15th September – Yelabuga Institute opens Book Museum

The Institute’s 120th anniversary coincided with Leo Tolstoy’s 190th anniversary, so it was decided to open one more museum dedicated to the art of writing and thinking. The Museum will also serve as a study room for the local library.

The event was hosted by Kazan Federal University for the first time. Tatarstan Academy of Sciences and Kazan State Institute of Culture served as co-organizers.

18th September – Minister of Health of Tatarstan Marat Sadykov visited Kazan University Clinic

The Minister toured several facilities, including an outpatient clinic, an emergency ward, and the Volga District Bone Marrow Donor Registry. All of them have been recently renovated and are now parts of one of the most advanced clinical centers in Tatarstan.

Rector Ilshat Gafurov and Chief Medical Officer of the University Clinic Almir Abashev spoke about their vision and further plans for the facilities.

19th September – 190th anniversary of Alexander Butlerov

Alexander Butlerov, one of the founders of organic chemistry, also served as the rector of Kazan Imperial University in 1860-1863. Apart from his fundamental scientific advances in chemistry, he also contributed to entomology. Many of Butlerov’s personal belongings and a part of his collection of butterflies are on display at various museums of Kazan Federal University. His name is commemorated in the city, and the KFU Institute of Chemistry is also named after him.

On the day of his anniversary, KFU executives laid flowers to his monument in Kazan. Furthermore, a conference and a temporary exhibition were organized by the Institute of Chemistry.
