Kazan Precision Medicine Workshop

The event is being held on 10th – 12th September by the Institute of Fundamental Medicine and Biology.

Contributors have arrived from the University of Nottingham, Cornell University, Elsevier, and Tatarstan Clinical Cancer Center.

During the opening ceremony, Director of the Institute Andrey Kiyasov and Deputy Head of Translational Medicine Strategic Research Unit Albert Rizvanov greeted the participants.

“A new trend for personalized precision medicine is developing in the world. Detailed tests, including genomic analysis, are held, and therapy recommendations are based on such profound research. A Cornell University representative spoke about a case where a specific genetic mutation was found for which there is no current approved medication; however, there are clinical trials with experimental treatments for such a mutation. The doctors decided to redirect their patients to these trials, and positive outcomes have arisen. The main question is how we can use omics data to create a fully detailed picture of a patient and how physicians can make decisions about existing or experimental treatments,” commented Dr. Rizvanov.

Anton Yuryev, Elsevier Service Director in Russia, presented his view on Big Data and doctor-patient communication problems, “I arrived with a report on how to use our databases for personalized medicine. The main obstacle for effective treatments in oncology is a lack of communication between patients and doctors. There are not many unknowns in this science as of now. However, the science itself develops rapidly, and doctors sometimes cannot keep up with the information overflow. There is a problem of integrating big databases into clinical practice.”

Some other questions to be discussed pertain to oncological research in Kazan, precision medicine in treatments of prostate, kidney, and other diseases.
