Over 800 donors join Volga Regional Bone Marrow Donor Registry during charitable event

The donation drive was organized to celebrate International Children’s Day.

The event lasted from 22nd May to 1st June in Tatarstan and is going on in Ulyanovsk Oblast since 1st June till 8th June.

Bone marrow transplant is known to be the only way to save lives in many cases of serious ailments. Only about 20% of such patients have compatible donors among their relatives. For others, donor registries are the only path to be cured.

During this year’s drive, employees of Republican Children’s Clinical Hospital, Republican Clinical Hospital, and Kazan University went through HLA typing to enroll in the registry. The list is still small in comparison with overseas analogues, so the registry welcomes everyone to provide their information for possible donorship.

Volga Regional Bone Marrow Donor Registry, a nonprofit entity, was registered by Kazan Federal University and Rusfond in 2018. Raushaniya Gayfullina, Deputy Director of the Institute of Fundamental Medicine and Biology, is the organization’s executive director.
