Rector Ilshat Gafurov met with Chairman of Union of Criminalists and Crimonologists Igor Matskevich

The talks were held on 16th May.

One of the questions of discussion was the ongoing cooperation between the Union of Criminalists and Crimonologists and the Faculty of Law. Social outreach programs have been under Rector’s special control lately. For example, a conference of the Association of Russian Lawyers was arranged this April.

Igor Matskevich is also Deputy Head of the Expert Council on Law of the Higher Attestation Commission, the federal authority on doctoral degrees. He and Dr. Gafurov agreed that the current degree system warrants modernization. In the recent years, aspirantura (PhD courses) have been regarded as the third level of tertiary education, which sometimes leads to anecdotal cases. Among them have been occurrences when people who had presented their PhD theses couldn’t receive a diploma because they had not yet listened to a required number of classroom lectures.

Both participants of the discussion agreed that this can be alleviated by the new initiative – to bestow the right to confer academic degrees on some of the leading universities. In that case, the institution’s reputation becomes the main instrument of quality control. Continuing that line of conversation, the Rector presented KFU’s latest work on in-house dissertation councils to the visitor.
