Chief of General Staff of Russian Army notes secure communications system created at Kazan University

GERAKL (Hercules) system was shown to Valery Gerasimov at an expo at Kazan Higher Tank Command College.

GERAKL, which stands for “generation and distribution of encryption keys”, is a highly secure encrypted communications system. It was designed and constructed by employees of the AstroChallenge Priority Research Unit based at KFU. Head of the Unit, Oleg Sherstyukov, explained how the system can benefit users to General of the Army, Deputy Minister of Defence, and Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces Valery Gerasimov during a meeting on Friday, 20th April.

Professor Sherstyukov said that the system is based on the unpredictability of distribution of radio signals in complex environments. Encryption keys are created through calculations of physical parameters. Deputy Minister Gerasimov and guests of the expo asked some questions and were visibly interested in the equipment.

The expo also featured other military technology emerging from Tatarstan, such as aerial drones, battleships, helicopters, and ammo. Among the exhibitors were Kazan Aviation Plant, Zelenodolsk Shipbuilding Plant, Radio Electronics Research and Production Enterprise, Kazan Helicopters, Kazan Gunpowder Plant, and others.
