Regional Center for Mathematical Education and Science to open doors in a few days

The project is planned for six years with first-year funding of 23.7 million rubles.

The Center's Research Supervisor is a KFU alumnus, Chief Research Associate of the Institute of the Ershov Institute of Informatics Systems, Dr. Victor Selivanov. KFU-stationed Co-Head of the Center is Professor Marat Arslanov, Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics.

According to the Russian Scientific and Technological Development Strategy, the Ministry of Education and Science started establishing such regional centers since 2017. About 10 regional universities are planned to become headquarters for such entities. Five are already in the opening stage.

Professor Arslanov commented, “The executive order has been published. The Ministry of Education and Science has allocated funds for half a year, which is 11.8 million rubles.”

The funds will be distributed to staff salaries, invited lecturers, conferences and events, secondary school activities, and seminars for math educators. The Center will occupy a refurbished building in the central campus, at 25 Kremlyovskaya Street. Four full-time employees have been hired.

Professor Arslanov added that the Center's priorities are mathematical analysis, algebra and mathematical logic, and geometry.

For this ongoing semester, a number of invited lecturers are going to arrive from Sweden, Vietnam, New Zealand, and Novosibirsk (where Dr. Selivanov currently works). KFU mathematicians will also intern abroad.

Professor Arslanov reminded, “Lobachevsky Medal and Prize with a monetary bonus of 75 thousand USD will be awarded every five years – the first was given to Professor Richard Schoen in 2017. Next year, we will be giving out the Lobachevsky Prize for Young Scientists. The Center will soon start working in this area as well.”

To this, Dr. Selivanov added, “Although the Center is branded as regional, it is, in fact, an international one. Ideally, we would like to create an international center à la German conference centers which function full-time and hold international conferences regularly.”
