Council of Rectors of Tatarstan approves measures in promotion of international admissions, life and safety policies

A regular meeting was held on 4th April.

Minister of Education and Science of Tatarstan Rafis Burganov, for whom it was the first such event, noted the growth of international admissions – from 2.3% of total in 2013 to 6.9% in 2017. This is a positive development, but international students also show higher levels of expulsions and dropouts. Rector Ilshat Gafurov to create a provincial-level center for international student adaptation, where the arriving youngsters can learn Russian and other subjects and acquire cultural skills. The proposal was accepted.

Chief of Staff of the Tatarstan Anti-Terrorist Commission Ildar Galiev presented the latest development in extremism prevention among local youth. A decision was made to organize special courses in this subject for guidance counsellors and student community leaders.

Deputy Head of Emercom in Tatarstan Sergey Sergeev urged everyone to strengthen life and safety measures in light of the recent tragedy in Kemerovo. Some educational facilities are still not equipped with smoke detectors, automatic sprinklers, and alarm systems. Staff members are sometimes ignorant about proper evacuation procedures. The Council decided to enhance life and safety measures and apply for additional funds for necessary renovations.

In conclusion, Rector Gafurov voiced suggestions about changes in the legal status of the Council of Rectors. They will be submitted to the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia and the Russian Council of Rectors.
