Maslenitsa Celebrated in Universiade Village

Traditional Eastern Slavic spring festival was celebrated at the main KFU dorm complex yesterday.

The Maslenitsa Week always includes a certain order of festivities, the most popular of which are effigy burning and pancake eating. In particular, Thursday is known as razgul (“big fun”), and the organizers made effort to make it so.

The celebration started with a rally. Accompanied by an accordion and chastushki, the participants went from the far end of the Village to the entrance. There, songs, dances, and standup routines were performed by a number of guests. Near the stage, various contests were held for everyone. Winners received blincoins (pancake coins), appropriately titled tokens that could only be used to buy pancakes.

A photo exhibition was organized to reflect how different houses of the dorm complex prepared for the coming spring. Winners were awarded with the right to set fire to the effigy of Maslenitsa and to start a circle dance.
