Institute of Geology and Petroleum Technologies Plans to Open Gemology Lab

Associate Professor, gemology expert Anatoly Nikolaev explained what the new unit's priorities will be.

“Our existing program is called 'Expert appraisal of gems, jewelry, antiques and cultural items'. It is quite in demand right now. Such a course is available in many leading institutions of the country,” said he.

Gemology has been a subject of interest for the Department of Geology and Lithology for a long time now. As Associate Professor Nikolaev said, in times of current financial volatility many people ponder buying precious stones, such as sapphires, rubies, or diamonds. Experts can establish the nature of provided stones, classify them, find out whether they have been modified, and determine their source of origin.

As for the price differences, a ruby that costs about 50 cents per one synthetic piece will go for 15 thousand USD for the same weight if it is natural.
