Intelligent Robotic Systems Lab Working on New Software for Emergency Services Robot

The software is based on ROS and enables the robot to scan its environments with a Hokuyo laser rangefinder.

In the process of scanning, the robot (in this case – a Russian model called Servosila Engineer) sends all the data to the operator in real time. After that, it autonomously creates a map to a target which has been prescribed by the operator. The robot can take account of newly discovered obstacles and reroute itself accordingly. The software is responsible for transferring the route data into commands for the robot’s engines.

The next step is to provide a full autonomy for the map creation process through the integration of a new mechanism of optimal research of unknown areas created by the Lab. It will be used by emergency services, industrial companies, surveyors, mining specialists, and other experts.

The Servosila Engineer model is hermetic and very light, so it can be transported by a single person in a backpack. Thus, it can be utilized in places with hindered access, such as during emergencies and ongoing warfare.
