Kazan University Plans to Open a Japanese Language Testing Center

Vice-Rector Linar Latypov broached the subject during a meeting with Counsellor of the Embassy of Japan, Head of Japan Foundation in Moscow Masakazu Takahashi.

Speaking about the rationale behind visiting Kazan, Mr. Takahashi mentioned three points, “First, it's the opening of an exhibition of Japanese dolls at the Khazina Gallery. Second, a meeting with teachers of Japanese at KFU. And third, a discussion about introducing Japanese TV production in Tatarstan, including dramas, anime, and culinary programs.”

As usual, Dr. Latypov gave a brief presentation of the University and its cooperation with Japanese partners. “As of now, 191 people are studying Japanese at KFU, and the number grows each year. Japanese culture and art also attract huge interest,” he said. After that, the Vice-Rector proposed to open a testing center.

Acting Chair of the Department of Altaic and Chinese Studies Alfiya Alikberova commented, “We have an extensive experience of international exams. Our department holds two exams in Korean language a year. We are ready to arrange and support the idea – there are plenty of people interested in studying Japanese. The center would open new opportunities for students and educators.”

Mr. Takahashi expressed gratitude for this big interest and said that he would open talks on the matter with colleagues in Tokyo.

In conclusion, Dr. Latypov offered to conduct a ceremonial sakura planting in Kazan. Currently, the only such plant in Russia is situated in Moscow.
