Visit by Acting Governor of Dagestan Vladimir Vasilyev

A delegation from the North Caucasian province arrived on 14th December, accompanied by the the President of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov.

The delegation arrived to Tatarstan with a working visit to familiarize with the scientific, educational, and industrial potential of the Republic.

The delegates got acquainted with the educational and research campus of the Institute of Fundamental Medicine and Biology and the regional engineering center of medical simulators "Center for Medical Science". KFU’s Medical Simulation Center embodies the idea of innovative medical education, where students undergo pre-training on simulation equipment before they are allowed to work with patients at the University Clinic.

The simulation equipment production is also located here. The Center for Medical Science is already producing and supplying a number of simulators to the international market. A simulator is a copy of a real human body and very closely reproduces its anatomical structure. Spine, neck, arms and legs are all realistically mobile.

The guests saw simulators, including those that are still under development, capable of showing symptoms of a number of conditions which physicians face during emergencies. Among them are anaphylactic shock, stenocardia with cardiac arrest, myocardial infarction of various types, heart failure with pulmonary edema, insecticide poisoning, asthma attack, rupture of the spleen, puncture wounds of the chest, subdural hematoma, and many others. Depending on the patient's condition and the doctor's actions, the robot changes its physiological characteristics. For instance, blood pressure drops and tachycardia starts during bleeding.

One of the training complexes is designed for anesthesiologists. The robot is able to recognize not only the medicine that the doctor injects, but also the dose, and, depending on it, appropriately changes the vital parameters: pulse, pupil's response to light, etc. An instructor supervises the whole process via webcams. One of the novelties of the center is a rehearsal simulator for surgeries. The simulator itself is able to upload information about the individual physiological features of a particular patient to the system, after which the surgeon can perform a virtual surgery the day before the real one.

Vladimir Vasilyev and Rustam Minnikhanov talked with students and even tested the simulation equipment personally. Director of the Institute Andrey Kiyasov said that Crimean Federal University is currently working on establishing a similar simulation center; moreover, it is entirely possible to open one in the Republic of Dagestan.

Later in the day, Vladimir Vasilyev arrived to the KFU Main Building, accompanied by the President of Tatarstan’s Chief of Staff Asgat Safarov and Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade of Tatarstan Denis Valeev. The Governor briefly talked with students from Dagestan and assured them that they will be in demand in their native region. He then proceeded to the History Museum, where Vice-Rector Linar Latypov briefly presented the University’s history and contemporary developments. The guest visited the Emperor’s Hall and the Lenin Memorial Classroom and took photos with staff and students.
