Projects of the Regional University Centers for Social Development and Petroleum Industry Approved at the Ministry of Economy of Tatarstan

A meeting was held on November 24th.

Yesterday, a similar application within the same framework “University as Centers of Innovative Development” was made by KFU to create a center for innovative development in translational medicine.

During today's talks, Deputy Minister of Economy Bulat Khaziakhmetov emphasized that the centers must be oriented at providing solutions for Tatarstan's socioeconomic development, new growth areas, technological advancement, and student entrepreneurship.

Vice-Rector Danis Nurgaliev said that KFU plans to establish centers for innovative, technological, and social development. The objective is to be in pace with the technological “train” which is speeding up day by day in all countries. One of the results must be the creation of many small innovative enterprises. He also presented a project of an innovative center in petroleum industry.

Former Vice-Rector, Deputy of the State Council of Tatarstan Andrey Artemyev showcased the project of the Regional University Center for Social Development, “Kazan Federal University has all the necessary competences to create a center for social development; it has over 10 institutes and other structural units in humanities and social sciences. There is also the Situation Center for Social Issues, the Volunteer Center, the Legal Clinic, and accelerators of educational programs for small and medium businesses and nonprofits.”

“The gist of the project is that the University should be involved in the region's life. The Center must be involved in solving social problems and modernizing the social sphere. How is the involvement degree measured? By KFU's participation in regional programs financed by the republican budget and oriented at social issues. If there is a problem, Tatarstan creates a program and allocates money. One of the indicators of effectiveness is entering as many programs as possible.”

“It's important that students orientate their work at a specific pertinent problem, i. e. researching a specific social project within their course and graduation works. If there is a business idea, a student can leave the University's walls and found a social business. It's a resource for nonprofits as well.”

Mr. Khaziakhmetov assured that the Ministry of Economy of Tatarstan will act as a supporter for the KFU's application to the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia. In the coming weeks, the Rector and project experts will be invited to Moscow to defend the application.
