Kazan remembers an outstanding civilian, graduate of Kazan University Gabriel Szerszeniewicz

On March, 1 Kazan Federal University hosts International scientific-and-practical conference “Scientific views of Professor Gabriel Szerszeniewicz in the modern context of convergence of private and public law (devoted to 150th birthday) ”.

Solemn opening of the conference was held at the University Assembly Hall with participation of representatives of the Republic`s Administration, judicial authorities, famous foreign and Russian scientists. The event was opened  by the KFU Vice-Rector on Research Danis Nurgaliev, the Minister of Justice of the Republic Midkhat Kurmanov delivered the greeting of the Prime-Minister Ildar Khalikov. Dean of the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Warsaw Krzysztof Wojciech Rączka, acting under the Chairman of Federal Arbitral Court of the Volga Region District Rakif Abdulvagapov, Chairman of Federal Arbitral Court of the Republic of Mariy El Andrey Bakulin, Dean of the KFU Faculty of Law Ildar Tarkhanov and other guests greeted the participants. All of them remembered Gabriel Szerszeniewicz  as an outstanding linguist who contributed to various fields of Law and made famous  Kazan University to the world.

During the solemn opening were awarded winners of the competition of scientific works among students and magistrates of the KFU Faculty of Law that were dedicated to the scientific heritage of the Professor Gabriel Szerszeniewicz. Winners were awarded by relative of Gabriel Szerszeniewicz – magistrate of Political Sciences - Krzysztof Antoni Szerszeniewicz. He came from Polnd to participate in the event dedicated to his famous relative.

Krzysztof Antoni Szerszeniewicz is not the only relative who came from Poland. University of Warsaw along with All-Russian Public Organization “Association of lawyers of Russia” and Kazan Federal University were the organizers of the conference. In this connection Professors from this University - Krzysztof Wojciech Rączka, Jarosław Jerzy Turłukowski - for several days delivered lectures on the Faculty of Law. For this reason they were awarded the  corresponding Certificates.

Krzysztof Wojciech Rączka and Ildar Tarkhanov signed the Memorandum of Understanding and the prospects of cooperation between the Faculty of  Law of Kazan Federal University and the Faculty of Law and Administration at Warsaw University.  

The Conference was continued by plenary meeting. The work of the scientific forum involves several areas: Civil Law, Entrepreneurial Law, Insolvency (Bankruptcy) and the Arbitration Process, Theory of State and Law, Private International Law. More than 250 scientists from Russia, Poland, Germany, Belarus, Ukraine and Kazakhstan came to take part in the conference.

Szerszeniewicz Gabriel ( born on January 1, 1863, Kherson district – died on August 31, 1912, Moscow) got both secondary and university education in Kazan. Upon completion in 1885 the Faculty of Law of Kazan University, he devoted his life for many years to the University: first of all, he worked at the Department of commercial law and commercial proceedings, then - at the Department of civil law and procedure. In 1888, he defended his master's thesis "System of trade actions: a criticism of the basic concepts of commercial law", in 1891 he defended his doctoral thesis on "Copyright on literary works".

Gabriel Szerszeniewicz worked at Kazan University until 1906, then he moved to St. Petersburg in connection with his election as a deputy of the First State Duma from the Cadets` Party.

After the dissolution of the First State Duma Gabriel Szerszeniewicz continued active, creative and educational activities at the Faculty of Law of  Moscow University, then at the Moscow Commercial Institute.

Works of Professor Gabriel Szerszeniewicz became doctrinal basis for many modern branches of the Law.
