Special Purpose Drone to Assist in Geodesy and Land Planning Surveys

Geoscan 401, a new research drone, was tested on October 27th.

The quadcopter was bought recently for the Photogrammetry Project implemented by the Space Geodesy Lab (part of SAU AstroChallenge). During the latest test it made 60 HD photos of the KFU campus from the elevation of 150 meters.

Head of Photogrammetry Project, Associate Professor Vladimir Bezmenov explains, “These shots will be used to teach students of geodesy/remote sensing and land planning/cadastral registry. Now we can create our own aerial photo databases for educational purposes.”

Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing Center was opened in July 2017 at the Institute of Engineering. It is equipped with photogrammetry stations, stereo monitors, and special software.

“Geoscan 401 is a part of the Photogrammetry Center. Thanks to his quadcopter, we will have new capabilities in various subjects of our educational programs for all levels. We now can make aerial photos for our research”, added Dr. Bezmenov.

Geoscan 401 includes a quadcopter, a Sony camera with stabilization, and appropriate software for route planning. It is constructed by the eponymous company in Saint-Petersburg, Russia.

Dr. Bezmenov has calibrated the drone with his two associates at the lab, Nayil Garaev and Vitaly Bezmenov.
