Results of the 10th Session of Project 5-100 Announced in Yekaterinburg

The Council convened on October 27th – 28th.

As in previous iterations, this time the 21 participating universities were divided in three groups by the size of subsidies. All the universities presented their strategies for 2018 – 2020, and the Council analyzed them.

The first group ended up including Higher School of Economics, ITMO University, MEPhI, MIPT, Novosibirsk State University, MISIS, and Tomsk State University. The second now comprises Kazan Federal University, RUDN University, First Moscow State Medical University, Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, Tomsk Polytechnic University, University of Tyumen, and Ural Federal University. The third group consists of Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University, Far Eastern Federal University, Electrotechnical University LETI, Samara University, Lobachevsky University, South Ural State University, and Siberian Federal University.

Vice-Premier of Russia, Chairwoman of the Project 5-100 Council Olga Golodets said that the Project as a whole is worth 10 billion rubles a year. Universities from the first group will receive about 780 million a year each, from the second – 480 million, and from the third – over 100 million.

The Council includes leading Russian and international officials, academics, and businesspersons. Six international experts are Philip Altbach, Michael M. Crow, Koenraad Debackere, Malcolm J. Grant, Weifang Min, and Lap-Chee Tsui. Vice-Chairpersons are Minister of Education and Science of Russia Olga Vasilyeva and Academic Policy Advisor of the Skolkovo School of Management Andrey Volkov.

The exact funding numbers for 2018 will be known in the next two weeks.

While in Yekaterinburg, Rector Ilshat Gafurov and the KFU team also visited Ural Federal University. Special attention was given to production facilities, including a lean production plant of pneumatic cylinders and a regional engineering center for 3D printing and additive manufacturing.
