International Forum on Mathematical Education Is Underway

The Lobachevsky Year event has attracted over 200 participants.

Vice-Rector Dmitry Tayursky greeted the participants on behalf of the University's leadership. He emphasized that no one can be successful in natural sciences nowadays without deep knowledge of mathematics.

Director of the Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics Maksim Khramchenkov was the next to step up to the stand. He spoke about the experiment with mathematical education currently undertaken by KFU. The new system of distributed pedagogical education (where future teachers study with non-teaching major students) is a part of the University's SAU Teacher 21. He confessed that this has posed quite a few challenges for educators and stimulated to work on their approaches.

Liliana Shakirova, Chair of the Department of Theories and Technologies of Mathematics and Information Technology Teaching, talked about the upcoming opening of the Lobachevsky Museum – the famous mathematician and Rector's erstwhile abode is now being refurbished for this purpose. Of course, the signifying event of the year is the award ceremony of the Lobachevsky Medal and Prize – this year's winner is Richard Schoen.

This forum takes up October 18th – 22nd. Among its events are MATHEDU-2017 conference, 36th international workshop of mathematics and informatics teachers, and 7th republican workshop of mathematics teachers. Key speakers are Murat Tchoshanov (University of Texas at El Paso), Frederic Castel (University of Reims Champagne-Ardenne), and Aleksandr Mordkovich (Moscow City University). A number of master classes and roundtables are also in the schedule.
