13th Derzhavin Readings Started at Kazan University

The conference is held jointly with Russian Law Academy.

This is third iteration of the conference in Kazan; the previous ones were held in Moscow.

Rector of RLA Olga Aleksandrova was the first to greet the audience. She noted that the forum will raise many questions for the first time in its history. The students who are participating will have the opportunity to listen to seasoned politicians and exchange ideas.

President of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov voiced the same idea, “We are always remembering Gavriil Derzhavin with much warmth, and we have a literary prize awarded annually on his birthday. While reading his works, we think about parliamentarianism and ways to improve our legal system”.

Derzhavin Prize in Law this year went to a KFU employee, Assistant Lecture of the Department of Constitutional and Administrative Law Alsu Khurmatullina. She received a check for 200 thousand rubles from President Minnikhanov.

Rector Ilshat Gafurov in his welcome speech noted, “Derzhavin’s name is tied with the history of Kazan University; he was a graduate of Kazan Gymnasium which served as the basis for our University. He is an excellent example for the students of the 21st century because his personality combined mobility, initiative, civil consciousness, and creative potential”.

Kazan University has always honored the memory of Derzhavin, a prominent poet and statesman, Minister of Justice of the Russian Empire. His monument, dismantled in the 1930s, was restored several years ago. First Derzhavin Conferences were held in Kazan in the 1990s, but they only covered his poetic heritage at that time. This new edition of the conference pertains mostly to law studies.

Other notable contributors at the plenary session were Deputy of the State Duma Pavel Krasheninnikov, Archbishop of Kazan Theophan, and Mufti Kamil Samigullin.
