First PRO Science Event of 2017 Was Dedicated to Mathematics and IT

This iteration was called «The Night Limit» and took place on the eve of May 11th.

Rector Ilshat Gafurov opened the event and talked about the history of the project, «When we first held PRO Science in 2016, we hoped to gather young people and tell them about the attractive side of science using simple and comprehensible words, to draw their attention to surprising new sides of familiar subjects. More and more guests have visited with each event, so I think the idea was auspicious. Today’s event opens this year’s cycle, and I am glad to witness that».

Deputy Minister of Education and Science of Tatarstan Andrey Pominov concurred, “People say that mathematics is the queen of all sciences. I am sure that this Science Night will convince everyone that statement is true”.

This particular night was a part of the Lobachevsky Year – which is 2017 at Kazan University. Nikolai Lobachevsky, one of the prominent rectors of KFU, was a mathematician and an avid champion of science and discovery.

Hundreds of visitors yesterday had a wide choice of activities. The evening comprised no less than 36 various types of “edutainment” – cybersport, trivia competitions, chess rivalries, master classes, science slams, VR sessions, physical experiments, interactive games, a light show, a science art exhibition, a 3D printing stand, and much more.

Of course, lectures were also presented. Among the honored contributors were Dmitry Nikolaev from the Institute of Information Transmission Problems and Nikolay Andreev from the Steklov Mathematical Institute. Rector and other invited persons visited one of the lectures and tried their luck in solving mathematical puzzles.

A special lecture for little visitors taught the kids about the history of geometry.

The main program of the Lobachevsky Year was also presented. As Rector Gafurov reminded, the Year will be concluded with the Lobachevsky Medal and Prize award ceremony on December 1st. The prize fund is USD 75 thousand. Before that the Lobachevsky Museum, located at his former residence, will be unveiled.
