Kazan University Visited by UNESCO Expert Mounir Bouchenaki

Mr. Bouchenaki, Special Adviser of UNESCO Director-General and of ICCROM Director-General, ICOMOS expert, and Director of the Arab Regional Center for World Heritage, was at the University on August 23rd.

The guest was introduced to the University’s Islamica Resource Center and World Heritage Resource Center. He then gave a lecture to students and employees of the Institute of International Relations, History and Oriental Studies; the lecture touched on heritage preservation and restoration topics.

During his meeting with the employees of IIRHOS Mr. Bouchenaki confessed that initially UNESCO experts hadn’t even known where Kazan was situated, but after the meeting of the World Heritage Committee in Saint-Petersburg in 2012 thousands of professionals found out about the city and Kazan University in particular.

Vice-President of ICOMOS Russia Rafael Valeev talked about KFU’s ongoing projects in this sphere. World Heritage Resource Center of KFU, created in 2015, works together with the Revival Foundation to promote the ratification of the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. Such an act will further facilitate special heritage preservation and cultivation measures in the country.

The sides then discussed other cooperation plans, including KFU’s prospective ties with Algerian and Bahraini academia.
