The third – and the biggest – installment of PRO Science project was held on July 20th.

The Institute of Fundamental Medicine and Biology and the Institute of Environmental Sciences opened their doors for visitors.

Greeting the audience were Rector Ilshat Gafurov, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Tatarstan Farid Abdulganiev, First Deputy Minister of Health of Tatarstan Sergey Osipov, and the two institute directors – Andrey Kiyasov and Svetlana Selivanovskaya.

Among other things, Rector Gafurov said, “Speaking about the goal of this event, I have to say that science as a whole develops rapidly nowadays, researchers are concentrated on their own work and often don’t even know what happens next door. There must be people who can explain in plain words what research is really about. Maybe the young people who are here today will be stimulated to take up science as their life path”.

Minister Abdulganiev mentioned the University's out-of-the-box approach, “KFU doesn’t cease to amaze, now with this unusual night format… Our Ministry has many joint projects with Kazan University, for example, the Admiralteyskiy pond revival project in Kazan”.

UNICS Center became the central ground for the event. Near the front entrance the guests could listen to live rock performances while familiarizing themselves with interactive mini-labs presented by the two institutes. There was a water safety test spot, a phone radiation measurement booth, several pieces of equipment to check vegetables and juices for nitrates, and a microscope photography expo. Also present was an insect display from the KFU Zoological Museum.

Then there were departmental events. The Department of Neurobiology showed how to study human and animal brains; the Department of Microbiology gave everyone a glimpse into the world of microscopic creatures; the Department of Botany and Plant Physiology demonstrated how to grow cells and tissues for testing purposes.

The Medical Simulation Center on Karl Marx Street was another ground opened last night. The visitors could learn to discern heart attack symptoms and to provide first aid. The Dentistry Class taught people the basics of dental anatomy and mouth hygiene. The Anatomical Museum was ready to show all other parts of the human body.

Of course, there were also lectures – no less than 12 of them. Among the popular topics were microbes, stem cells, human genome, environmental biotechnology, climate change, atherosclerosis, oncology, and IT medicine.

Several foreign guests of the University also seized the opportunity to attend.
