Battling Extremism Through Enlightenment

A conference titled «Forms and Methods of Counteracting Extremist and Terrorist Ideologies» took place on July 19th.

The meeting started with Rector Ilshat Gafurov's foreword. He said, “Extremists try to attract young people who don’t have profound knowledge of religions, are suffering from social deprivation and psychological problems and are therefore prone to ideological indoctrination. Having little chances to find themselves in a society, these young people can choose to adhere to extremist ideas and thus feel significant and indispensable in a way”.

Therefore creating a favorable environment for young people is paramount. Kazan University is on the forefront of this work, with its programs in employment, scholarship programs, accommodation, and various forms of support.

Other contributors expanded the scope of the conference and discussed political situation in different countries and regions. Positive activities are very important in fighting extremism, and patriotic youth groups must voice their views and showcase their success stories on the web, said experts.

Tatarstan Anti-Terrorism Commission Chief of Staff Ildar Galiev shared good news – more and more people become disillusioned with terrorist teachings and try to return to their former peaceful lives. The government makes efforts to help such converts (or re-converts, as it were).
