Future Masters Work on New Medications

Olga Kolosova, a master’s degree student at the Institute of Physics, received a scholarship from the Tatarstan Academy of Sciences for her research in protegrins.

The awarded paper was titled “Spatial composition of protegrin PG-2 in micelle solution studied through high-resolution NMR spectroscopy”.

Ms. Kolosova explained that protegrins are small proteins with wide spectrum antimicrobial effect. Their peptides disrupt cell membranes, so spatial reconstruction of the “peptide - cell” system is necessary for research.

She currently studies PG-2 in the solution with dodecylphosphocholine micelles: “NMR spectroscopy is very useful for studying those peptides in the solution. We used Overhauser effect spectroscopy which is very informative in helping determine inter-nuclear distances in a molecule. Thus we found the special structure of PG-2 protegrin”.

Protegrins are very promising in antimicrobial drug research. Their current analogs (namely, IB-367) are still in preclinical studies, said Ms. Kolosova.

The scholarship is not her only achievement, of course. This year alone was marked by two joint papers with the young researcher’s name on them – both in the Journal of Biomolecular NMR.
