Progress of Kazan University Monitored by International Academics

The International Scientific Council of Kazan University held a meeting on November 20th.

Rector Ilshat Gafurov opened the discussion with his report on current affairs and the University's progress. According to the current data, citations grow even faster than that was set by the Competitiveness Program. The university also successfully transitions to a research university.

International cooperation is on the rise. 2nd International Forum on Pedagogical Education will be held by KFU in spring 2016. Ten chief editors of Scopus journals are expected at the event.

Director of the Institute of Fundamental Medicine and Biology Andrey Kiyasov told about new projects, among them the creation of the University Clinic, new clinical research center and omics center.

Professor at the same institute Albert Rizvanov shared info about new advancements in pharmacy. The main of them is that KFU is now the only full-cycle pharmaceutics center in Russia where everything from research to production can be made. The efforts are currently concentrated on medications against diabetes, cancer and Alzheimer's disease.

Associate Professor at the Department of Russian Language and Applied Linguistics Elena Gorobets presented interdisciplinary research in the recovery of stroke patients. Logopedists, physicians and linguists cooperate in this unique project.

Vice-Rector for Research Danis Nurgaliev talked about oil and petrochemistry research, new horizontal drilling methods and viscous oil refining, petrochemical catalysts. Associate Professor at the Institute of Chemistry Mikhail Varfolomeev joined him and added some data on the catalysts for polymer production. They have become especially pertinent since the imposition of sanctions on some types of chemical imports.

Professor of the Institute of Physics Ilfan Bikmaev moved the listeners' attention from the Earth deeps to deep space. He told about X-ray observatories Integral and Chandra and about the soon to begin its work Spectre-RG, a joint German-Russian observatory. It will be able to conduct unique research.

Ayrat Sitdikov from the Institute of International Relations, History and Oriental Studies presented the Archeometry Excellence Center. The Center's employees aim to study environmental history and ancient industrial culture.

Director of the above institute Ramil Khayrutdinov showed some details of the Islamica Excellence Center's work.

The members of International Scientific Council expressed content with the reports. They also posed some questions that were answered by Rector Gafurov and Vice-Rector for Education Dmitry Tayursky.
