Expanding Links with Egypt

Guests from the Arab Republic of Egypt met with Rector Ilshat Gafurov on September 10th.

Representatives of the National Research Centre of Egypt spent two days visiting the labs of Kazan University and witnessing some works in progress. They have become especially interested in agriculture, medicine, and engineering projects.

Dr. Gafurov made some further comments on the details not yet familiar to the guests. In particular, he touched upon Yelabuga and Naberezhnye Chelny branches, 'We have the Naberezhnye Chelny Engineering Institute. Chelny is a home for some of the largest machine building factories, nearby Nizhnekamsk – for petrochemical giants, and Yelabuga is a large special economic zone. The Engineering Insitute is an innovative cluster including branches in Yelabuga and Naberezhnye Chelny, small innovative enterprises, KFU technopark, automotive and biomedical companies of the area'.

In turn, the Egyptian delegation invited Kazanites to their Research Centre for collaboration. They are also ready to send masters and postgraduates to study in Kazan. The financing is supposed to be split, the same goes for grant applications. This kind of cooperation can benefit both sides by raising the number of publications and promoting the partners on the international stage.

President of NRC Ashraf Hamad Shaalan was content with the visit, 'Your university is a good example of research cooperation. There is a lot to be learned here. Our Research Centre is ready to welcome your scientists and share ideas. We hope that this will come to fruition and want to express gratitude for giving us the chance to come here and sit down with your leading researchers'.

The number of postgraduates and PhDs involved in collaborative projects and the areas of mutual interest are to be determined by November.

'As of now, we have mostly cooperated in humanities. Now we can reach new heights – we are very interested in agriculture, physics, and medicine as well', concluded Dr. Gafurov.

The parties then signed an agreement and exchanged gifts.
