Ecologists of Kazan University Work on Reviving Parks and Public Gardens

A number of renovated parks and public gardens in Tatarstan opened for the visitors on September 5th and 6th. Employees of the University had a hand in the matter.

Among the public gardens unveiled during the weekend was 'Chishmale' ('Spring Well'), the architectural design of which was executed by the Department of Environmental Engineering and Water Use.

"The story of KFU's involvement started eight years ago. At that time the Water Ecosystems Lab made an ecological passport for the small spring lake on Chishmale street, - explained Head of the Department of Environmental Engineering and Water Use Nafissa Mingazova. - 2 years later the lake was destroyed during the construction of a petrol station, but local residents fought for their right to recreate the green zone and succeeded".

Dr. Mingazova contributed to the struggle by standing before the court as an independent expert.

After the court ruling KFU's employees made draft drawings of the lake renovation project. One of them was finally approved by Aide to the President of Tatarstan Natalya Fishman. She decided it was best to reintroduce the natural lake to the public garden.

The greenlit project was then finalised and implemented. All the proposed ideas were met with utmost attention. All the proposals were put into effect: recreating the lake in its previous borders, feeding the lake with an artificial well through a cascade creek, water circulation, etc. The garden was made according to the standards of Italian terrace gardens, with multilevel terraces and rock gabions.

Thus it's safe to say that 'Spring Well' was one of the trickiest projects among those opening in 2015. However, the job was done brilliantly by the contractors Ak Bars Stroy and Akvarey. This is now definitely one of the most beautiful gardens in Kazan.

The opening ceremony was attended by Interim President of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov and Mayor of Kazan Ilsur Metshin. President and local citizens were pleased to open the valve of the freshly built spring.

There is still some work to be done on vertical gardening and lake maintenance, so KFU's researchers continue their observations.

It must also be mentioned that employees of the Department of Environmental Engineering and Water Use worked on the project of Lake Kharovoe in Kazan and some others.
