Cutting Edge Research in Petrochemistry and Medicine Conducted at Kazan University

Curing degenerative diseases might become one of the applications of the research currently held at  KFU.

The labs are situated in the new building of the Institute of Chemistry. The building is due to be officially unveiled on September 4th with the participation of Interim President of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov.

The research in petrochemistry is aimed at increasing recovery of heavy oils, improving the properties of intra-reservoir oil, reduce the density and viscosity of oil, the content of sulfur and nitrogen in it. This all is in order to simplify the transportation, preparation, and refining. The research in physical and chemical properties of oils and bitumen under high pressure and temperature is also currently in progress. This helps advance the knowledge of thermal analysis of energy-rich compounds and explosives.

The research in biophysical chemistry is vital for treating lethal degenerative diseases (Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, spongiform encephalopathy), increasing the biotech enzymes’ resistance to environmental factors. There is also work on innovative low-toxicity contrast agents for MRT diagnostics, antifungal and antibacterial medications.

Some of KFU's work is already used in industrial production. The University cooperates with many significant local enterprises and makes major contributions to import substitution. For example, October 2014 saw the establishment of Kataliz-Prom LLC, a company successfully displacing imported catalysts by such giants as Shell and BASF. The catalysts are in use at NKNK.

Cooperation with TNG Group resulted in creating new devices for oil exploration and extraction control. The equipment is on par with best foreign analogues. TNG Group has recently won a number of bids for seismic research and oil exploration, the fields traditionally dominated by Schlumberger and Halliburton.

Moreover, a contract with Haldor Topsoe will soon be signed which includes the joint work on styrene production catalyst.

Cooperative research is also in progress with Tatneft and TAIF. This includes catalysts for lowering the viscosity of oil, refining of bitumen in burnable shales, catalysts and adsorbents for demetallisation of oil residue.

Note. Insitute of Chemistry of KFU is ranked 1st – 3rd in Russia together with its counterparts from MSU and SPbSU by the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia.
