New Archeological Museum to Be Established In Sviyazhsk

Archeological Museum of KFU and Restoration Center of KFU showed the project to State Counsellor of Tatarstan Mintimer Shaimiev.

It’s only natural that this year’s Archeology Day celebrations took place in Sviyazhsk which is one of the biggest architectural heritage centers in Tatarstan. The only other comparable site is nearby Bolghar. Counsellor Shaimiev reflected, ‘We have to remember our history, and the attention paid to Sviyazhsk these days is proof that we are determined to do so’.

KFU plays a major role in restoring and popularizing the ancient history of Tatarstan. A street was recently discovered in Sviyazhsk which preserved many cultural layers through the centuries in almost mint condition. This gave the involved parties the idea to create an innovative archeological museum the project of which was presented yesterday. It will be built into a hill. The most exciting thing about the museum, however, will be that its exhibits will change with the progress of on-site digging works. Thus guests of the island will see a new exhibition every time they visit.

Almost all of the institutes of Kazan University have their part in the project. Rector Ilshat Gafurov promised that geologists, biologists, chemists, geneticists will use their brand new lab equipment to study the excavated samples. That’s why a new restoration research center will also be opened with the museum.

All the aforementioned projects are supported by State Counsellor Mintimer Shaimiev and the Revival Foundation. The goal is to register Sviyazhsk as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
