KFU to Open the First IT Clinic in Russia

The clinic will be jointly founded by Kazan Federal University, RIKEN Institute and Juntendo University.

Chief Scientist of the Genome Science Laboratory of the RIKEN Instiute Dr. Hayashizaki Yoshihide says that the main goal is to create the safest clinic in Russia which will be based on personalized diagnostics (genome-based analysis and prescriptions).

This is will be the first case when pharmacogenomics is integrated into hospital practice.

Dr. Hayashizaki explains: “Genome data is accumulated very quickly, so doctors cannot keep pace without special tools. The new IT system will collect all the necessary data and allow medical professionals to find out everything about how this particular disease is caused by the patient’s genome by simply typing in a name of the required medication”.

A number of diagnostic tools is currently under development specifically for the KFU Clinic’s labs. Most of the side effects will be eliminated through genome analysis making the system extremely safe. The diagnostic tools will be researched at KFU with the help of industrial partners.

Dr. Hayashizaki elaborates further: ”As of now we don’t have data about Tatarstan population’s genomes. We have to find out how extensively can the existing FDA reference database be used here”.

The pilot tests are tentatively scheduled to begin in October-November 2015.
