KFU Becomes a Venue For Human Rights Studies

This school is titled «International protection of economic, social and cultural rights» and attracted more than 200 people from 19 Russian cities. The School, organized by the Consortium of Russian Universities, takes place from June 22nd to June 26th.

The School aims to broaden the participants' perspective on human rights protection, the activities of the relevant UN agencies and the European Court of Human Rights, implementation of international human rights standards in Russia.

Rector Ilshat Gafurov noted that the decision to hold this year's event at the University means that local research potential is highly valued. He mentioned that the School will be divided into two clusters called “Economic and social rights of disadvantaged groups” and “Economic, social and cultural rights during conflicts and in post-conflict situations”.

The participants will have unique opportunities to get in touch with experts from the UN agencies (including the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights), ombudsmen, professors, human rights activists, NGO representatives. There will also be model contests the final stage of which will be held at the Supreme Court of the Republic of Tatarstan. Here the best teams will compete in resolving the disputes usually handled by the European Court of Human Rights.

The audience was also addressed by the UN Senior Counsellor for Human Rights in Russia Richard Komenda, Chairman of the State Council of the Republic of Tatarstan Farid Mukhametshin, Commissioner for Human Rights of the Republic of Tatarstan Sariya Saburskaya, Senior Research Consultant of the Faculty of Law Ildar Tarkhanov.

The address by the Commissioner for Human Rights of Russia Ella Pamfilova was also read by her representatives at the event.
