This study of the structure of youth values is one among several studies conducted in recent years on various ages, genders and ethno-cultural groups. Its main feature is that it is based on a theoretical model and a corresponding methodology that previously has not been used by other authors. The essence of this model is the understanding of values as functional modalities within the framework of which the significance of objects and interactional situations is determined. Four types of modality are identified, forming relatively independent ‘value spaces’. This empirical study is based on a survey of 2,542 respondents, representing students and school aged young people of Tatar and Russian nationalities. It revealed that the main differences between these ethno-cultural groups consists of a greater preference for pragmatic values by the Tatar group and a greater focus on values associated with social interactions for the Russian group.

Key words: values, interaction, functions, primary value relations, primary functional values, values spheres of life, values ways of life, Tatars, Russians.
