Аннотация

Статья посвящена отношению британской общественности к проблеме создания и развития в Трех королевствах регулярной армии во второй половине XVII – начале XVIII в. После гражданских войн середины XVII в. в Англии был создан институт регулярной армии. До 1688 г. в британской печати тема армии и тирании, при ее помощи насаждаемой, из-за действий цензуры практически не поднималась. После Славной революции 1688–1689 гг. критика или апологетика идеи постоянной королевской армии становится интересной и востребованной темой для британских памфлетистов. В конце XVII в. ведущим автором, критиковавшим регулярную армию как инструмент тирании, был Джон Тренчард. Активную полемику с ним развил Даниэль Дефо, защищавший вооруженные силы как основной инструмент по отстаиванию государственной и религиозной независимости Великобритании. Помимо них, целый ряд публицистов активно высказывались за и против существования в Трех королевствах регулярных вооруженных сил. Тема оставалась актуальной для британской общественности до второй половины XVIII в.
