Alfrid Bustanov (University of Amsterdam) delivered a lecture Soviet Islam Reconsidered: Trying to Hear Voices from Private Archives on December, 18. The event took place as an activity of Ethnographic Club, the joint project of KFU Department of Archeology and Ethnography and Center for Cultural Studies of Post-Socialism.

Lecturer: Alfrid Bustanov, PhD (University of Amsterdam), graduate of Omsk State University (Faculty of History). At present A. Bustanov is a post-doc at the University of Amsterdam, a curator of Tatar manus­cripts at the KFU Department of Rare Books and Manus­cripts. Author of papers on History of Islam in Siberia.

The lecture analyzed different directions in development of Muslim communities in after-war USSR. It was illustrated with the unique historical material – photos from 1920-30s magazines. In answer to the questions A. Bustanov explained why he had chosen the topic. He recommended using the funds of KFU Department of Rare Books and Manus­cripts which contain rich information on history of Tartars and history of Islam in Russia.
