KFU Intends to Start Competing for International Patents

Today, on the 08th of November, representatives of Bastille company, Mr. Bradley Larchan and Ms. Vera Anderson, visited Kazan Federal University. Their purpose was to offer the University some services of the company, which is successful in global development of intellectual property and technology commercialization, with scientific research institutes from all over the world being its clients.

The guests met with the Vice-Rector of KFU for Research, Mr. Danis Nurgaliev, the head of Research Activity Directorate, Ms. Natalya Zhuravlyova, the head of the Patent and Licensing Department, Mr. Ildar Nazmiev, and the head of Technology Transfer and Commercialisation Department, Mr. Yuriy Vorobyov.

Opening the meeting, Mr. Danis Nurgaliev underlined that patent getting and technology commercialization issue was very interesting to the University, especially because at that time KFU didn’t have any international patents.

The Exe­cutive Director of Bastille company, Mr. Bradley Larchan, described the system of interaction with higher education institutions and emphasized that the company had been established by the law firm Fish & Richardson working in the sphere of intellectual property with a view to assist academic and scientific research institutions in getting maximum output of their investments in inventions through their commercialization.

Distinctive feature of a program developed and implemented by Bastille company and having the same name is that it permits scientific research institutions to get patents and commercialize technologies with the help of highly qualified team of lawyers and specialists in business without any preliminary financial expenses. It means that the company gets compensation only in case it gains incomes from commercialization.

The company’s work with higher education institutions is based on a frame agreement. Signing this agreement the university gets the right to send its technologies to Bastille company. In Russia the company has already signed such an agreement with Ural Federal University, and one of technologies of this university has already been included in the company’s program.

Kazan Federal University’s representatives showed interest to activity carried out by Bastille company; preliminary date of agreement signing was also named – the first months of the year 2014.
