VI International Natural Sciences Tournament was held in Saint-Petersburg from the 11th to the 16th of November. Scientific tournaments offer to participants different fundamental and industrial tasks which must be solved in teams. INST is based on 3 disciplines: Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Most of the tasks also require economical estimation. Competition is divided into two leagues: international (English-speaking) and Russian-speaking. Teams put together the strongest students – winners of different international and national Olympiads. Chack-Chack Norris, the team of Kazan federal university, participated in INST for the second time. 4 members of the team study at the Institute of Chemistry. They are Mikhail Yagofarov, captain, Ruslan Lukin (both – second-year students), Dilyara Khaibrakhmanova and Timur Bulatov (both – third-year students) and Timur Latypov who is the third-year student of Institute of Fundamental Medicine and Biology.
Last year we became the winners of Russian-speaking League with significant odds (the 1st place had 12 points more than the 2nd of total 120).
This time, we decided to play in the English League. It promised to be interesting contest because teams from 18 countries were selected to the Intramural round: Russia, China, USA, Japan, Poland, Germany Singapore, Ukraine, Switzerland, India, Indonesia, Denmark, Canada, Malaysia, Belarus, Norway, Sweden, Czech Republic. We had shown our best in qualifying tours, on the 12th and the 14th of November, and went to the final where we met with the team of Ukraine from Kharkiv and the team from Saint-Petersburg Pharmaceutical Academy. It was the hottest final ever: points were very close and nobody of us knew who could become the winner and bring cup home. In every challenge one team plays role of speaker, the second is opponent and the third is reviewer. Final consists of 6 challenges and every team plays each role for two times. We've been scoring a little bit more than other teams in every round. But hidden points could cardinally change situation. Nevertheless, judges were impressed by our team the most and expressed their respect after the end of final games. On the ending ceremony we were very glad to hear that we were the winners of the International League with 102/120 points and to take the main cup. Notice that second and third places scored 94/120 points and our team had big odds again. But it's important to say that this tournament, as all competitions, is not only dedicated to science. It's a great place to make new friends and to meet the old. Judges were not the only people who were impressed by our performances, our rivals were impressed too. And it was a great pleasure to talk to students with the same interests.
Chack-Chack Norris is not the only one team from Kazan federal university on INST. Alabrys represented Alma-mater in Russian League. All members of this team are the first-year students. They are Ivan Kharyushin, Alexey Shulyatyev, Danil Kuznetsov from the Institute of Chemistry and Aigul Fatyhova from the Institute of Fundamental Medicine and Biology and they spent incendiary performance, although, had not enough experience to go the final. But Alabrys has all chances to repeat the success of older Chack-Chack Norris next year.
