The Department of Foreign Languages and Cultures was founded in 2011 on the basis of several departments of the Tatar State University of the Humanities and Pedagogy. The department offers a degree in the specialty 035700.62 Linguistics (translation - translation studies). All lectures and courses on the specialty are taught in foreign languages. The first foreign language for majority of students is English. The second foreign language options include German, French, Spanish, and Chinese. During the undergraduate studies period students have opportunities to take part in international events in our city and get acquainted with specific features of translators’ work.
Upon receiving a bachelor’s or specialist’s degree, students have an opportunity to continue their education and take the master’s program. The master’s program offered at the department meets the international standards of this higher education level.
Negotiations on organizing joint projects with foreign universities are being held at present.
The department also organizes extracurricular activities for students.
The academic staff of the department includes one doctor of philology, 8 candidates of philology, 2 candidates of pedagogy, 6 senior lecturers, and assistants.
Research interest of the academic staff focuses on such aspects of philology as theoretical problems of translation, phraseology, cultural linguistics, cognitive linguistics, psycholinguistics, terminology, stylistics, etc.
In order to approve scientific research results and exchange experience with Russian and foreign colleagues, the Department of Foreign Languages and Cultures faculty members take part in such interregional and international conferences, seminars, and forums, symposiums, as NATE, series of lectures and seminars hosted by well-known foreign professors. Some of the lecturers are members of the NATE Association for the Teaching of English and the Association of Linguist Scholars Europhras, etc. Almost every lecturer has hands-on experience in translation.
The department’s academic staff includes authors of serious scientific works (Phraseological Meaning in Lexicographical Description and Context, Contextual Usage of Phraseological Units, Russia-English-German-Turkish-Tatar Phraseological Dictionary, Moral Upbringing of a Tatar Woman, Language. Society, Consciousness: collection of papers, Professional Linguistic Personality), teaching manuals, and scientific papers.
The department’s academic staff participates in scientific projects of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Tatarstan: Tatarstan Ministry of Education and Science grant Algarysh, 2011 (Candidate of Philology, Senior Lecturer Belyaeva L.A., Candidate of Philology, Associate Professor Palutina O.G.), the Russian Liberal Arts Research Fund 07-04-29402 а/В (Candidate of Philology, Associate Professor Ashrapova A.Kh.), the Russian President’s grant for young Russian scholars and leading research schools, 2010 (Candidate of Philology, Senior Lecturer Kuznetsova I.I.).
