The importance of ecology in modern life is doubtless. A competent environmental specialist is necessary for any country and our future depends on his professionalism. Environmental science is penetrating into all spheres of social and economic activities and is included into the list of the national development priorities of the Russian Federation.

About the programs

The main courses are General Ecology, Ecology and Environmental Management, Biology with the Basics of Ecology, Environmental Monitoring, Applied and Social Ecology, Human Ecology, Urban Ecology, Biosphere Studies, Legal Basis of Environmental Management, Bioindication and others.

The courses are delivered by highly qualified specialists with 80% having academic degrees and titles. The staff includes specialists in various fields who give lectures, supervise laboratory work and seminars on all ecological disciplines.

Study process

Modern technologies are broadly used during the educational process in order to provide state-of-the-art training of future specialists, bachelors, and masters in the field of ecology. 

Field practical work is an obligatory component of the educational process. It helps to strengthen and expand the knowledge students have obtained during theoretical courses, and demonstrates the role of flora and fauna in ecosystems and the connection between an organism and the environment.  In addition it instills certain skills of research work. During the field trips, students must familiarize with a variety of species found in different habitats of Tatarstan and learn how to collect animals and plants samples and identify their taxonomy. They also must familiarize themselves with a variety of natural conditions typical for the region.
The locations where the practical field work takes place are Vysokogorsky, Zelenodolsky and Laishevsky districts of Tatarstan, as well as the city of Kazan. Students also visit biological station of the University of Stavropol, White Sea Biological Station of Kazan Federal University and the others.
At the undergraduate level, an obligatory work placement in various environmental organizations of Tatarstan is provided. A significant part of students interns at the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Tatarstan, Ministry of Forestry of the Republic of Tatarstan, the General Directorate for the Protection and Use of the Fauna of the Republic of Tatarstan etc.

Career prospects

The graduates of the Department work successfully in different environmental organizations and contribute to the nature preservation. After completion of the bachelor course they have the opportunity to continue their education in postgraduate level.
