Department was created in 2011 on the basis of laboratory "Fundamental and applied biotechnology" of the department - Physiology of the plants, one of the oldest departments of the Kazan state university. The main workers of this department are highly skilled teachers and leading experts in the field of biotechnology, microbiology, physiology of plants, biochemistry.

The scientific direction of department is connected with studying and the solution of fundamental and applied questions of biotechnology, including research connected with physiology of anaerobic bacteria, with a secondary metabolism of plants, receiving biologically active microbal and a vegetable connections.
