University of Eastern Finland and KFU: The First Steps Towards Each Other

KFU administration met with the delegation of the University of Eastern Finland on May, 20.

The delegation included Rector Academic Jukka Mönkkönen, Director of the Institute of Public Health and Clinical Nutrition Jussi Kauhanen, Project Manager of the School of Pharmacy Johanna Räikkönen, Dr. Raisa Giniatullina, Directors of Aducate Jussi Virsunen and Sanna Iskanius, the representatives of the Baltic Institute of Finland Zolfia Mamina and Irina Sarno.

Kazan Federal University was presented by Vice-Rector for International Relations Linar Latypov, Director of the Institute of Fundamental Medicine and Biology Andrei Kiiasov, professors of the Institute of Physical Education, Sport and Restorative Medicine.

Jukka Mönkkönen presented the University of Eastern Finland. It was established in 2010 as the result of the merger of the University of Joensuu and the University of Kuopio. With approximately 15,000 students and 2,800 members of staff, the University of Eastern Finland is one of the largest universities in Finland which offers more than 100 majors. The university comprises Philosophical Faculty, Faculty of Science and Forestry, Faculty of Health Sciences, and Faculty of Social Sciences and Business Studies. The goal of the University is to be among the top three most significant universities in Finland and among the leading 200 universities in the world (in QS-2013 ranking the university took position # 291).

The negotiations served to identify 2 priority areas of cooperation – medicine and pharmacology. However, Jussi Kauhanen stressed out that interaction can be developed in all directions such as continuing education and Russian studies. It is necessary to mention that Russian studies are considered to be an area of expertise for the UEF. In research relating to Russia and the European borders, border regions and fringe areas, the university seeks to reach the international top level.

The parties agreed to prepare and sign Memorandum of Understanding. In order to discuss the joint OpenLab on healthy nutrition the round table with the UEF representatives will be organized on May, 21.   

The guests will visit the laboratories and research centers if the Institute of Fundamental Medicine and Biology during their 3-day visit.
