Kazan University physicist discovered an inexpensive method of lungs tumor diagnostics

The earlier cancer disease is revealed, the more successful its treatment will be. From the point of view of early diagnostics lungs tumor is almost undetectable. The existing method (X-ray) can detect tumor only when its size is large. In this case treatment is almost ineffective.

However young scientist, junior researcher of the Department of Quantum Electronics and Radiospectroscopy of KFU Institute of Physics, Egor Alakshin, proposed a new diagnostic method that can detect a tumor on the earliest stages when feasibility of full recovery can be achieved.

The physicist told about the existing methods to detect lungs tumor. The most popular is fluorography that has a plenty of advantages, such as its simplicity and cheapness. Unfortunately, its main disadvantage is that the disease can be detected only on its latest stages, when doctors can do nothing.

Egor Alakshin proposes to apply lungs tomography as a method for early cancer detection.

The essence of this method is that a person should inhale gas while undergoing tomography. Polarized Helium III can be used for such purposes. The aim of my work was to create a substance with the help of which we can polarize Helium III. Using this method will enable tomographic scanner “to see” gas in lungs. Hence, it will be possible to differ healthy lungs from diseased ones.

Meanwhile, Helium is very expensive gas. Its average price is 930 dollars for litter. That`s why it is necessary to recycle this gas in order to apply on a massive scale.

For his invention Egor Alakshin was awarded Evgeniy Zavoiskiy prize in natural sciences. However young researcher is going to further his project, he prepares a new version of system that uses cheap gas – xenon.

Evgeniy Zavoiskiy prize awarding is a momentous event for young researches from Kazan and Tatarstan. This prize was established in 1997 by the 90-th anniversary of Evgeniy Zavoiskiy and it is given to those researchers who achieved great success in Experimental, Theoretic and Applied Physics.
