Professor of medicine, Mr. Jan Willem de Vos (Netherlands), delivered an open lecture in KFU Branch in Naberezhnye Chelny

For the first time in KFU branch in Naberezhnye Chelny teachers, employees, students and all those who wished have got a unique opportunity to attend an open lecture of the Professor of Medicine, Mr. Jan Willem de Vos, from Netherlands.

In his opening speech preceding the lecture the Professor paid attention to the fact that on the day before, that is, on the 30th of April, a big holiday had been celebrated in Holland: the Queen Beatrix after 33 years of ruling had officially handed over the reins of power to her elder son, Willem-Alexander. Furthermore, it was a surprise for many attendees to learn that the year of 2013 was declared a year of Russia in Netherlands and Netherlands in Russia.

In KFU branch in Naberezhnye Chelny Mr. Jan Willem gave a lecture devoted to the man’s dependence on alcohol and drugs. Moreover, the Professor attracted attention of the audience to the fact that dependences were diverse, but all of them had common prime cause consisting in the man’s dissatisfaction with his life and surrounding. To prove his words the Dutch Professor gave examples of two cases from his medical practice, in which he had to deal with love dependence, and paid attention to the fact that both of these cases became critical because people hadn’t had an opportunity to openly express their emotions and had been suppressing their thoughts and feelings too violently.

Mr. Jan Willem works in a mental hospital, paying special attention to the problems of alcohol and drug addiction. According to the Professor, work with patients brings him a great pleasure in spite of all difficulties arising in the course of his work. During the lecture the Dutch Professor told the audience about his researches in the field of narcology, divulging an important information concerning dependence nature and methods of its curing in a simple and easily understandable way; he also spoke about the doctor’s attitude towards his profession, himself and patients and shared his methods of work in the sphere of dependence treatment.

“The most important is to establish a confidential contact with the patient, – noted the Professor during his lecture. – In no case should the patient be told that he is sick – this will arouse nothing but an aversion with him. You should behave in such a way so as to make the patient tell you about his problems himself.”

The lecture left no one indifferent. The attendees learnt a lot of new things and got detailed answers to all their questions, with the major part of them being asked in the English language.

“I am for the first time in KFU branch in Naberezhnye Chelny and made a speech being invited by my friend, Mr. Sergey Gorbunov. I am overfilled with emotions regarding the lecture given, everything was perfect, the audience was very active. It was very pleasant for me to address students of your university, and I especially enjoyed answering interesting questions asked by the audience”, – said Mr. Jan Willem after the lecture.
