Our research team has studied the influence of various water-soluble, positively charged synthetic polyelectrolytes on in vitro cytotoxicity, cell and nucleus morphology, and monolayer expansion changes. As a result, the most popular polyelectrolytes were ranked from the safest to the most toxic concerning cell cultures. The authors also noted that there exists a relationship between the structure of the polyelectrolytes and their toxicity, which is necessary for the optimization of drug and gene delivery systems.
