The Difficulties and Joys of Poetic Translation

On November 17, 2020 at the Institute of Philology and Intercultural Communication  together with the charitable organization «Happy Stories», there was a meeting with the poet, interpreter Maria Mikhailovna Lukashkina. M.M. Lukashkina is the owner of an honorary diploma for translating a collection of poetry by R.L. Stevenson. She is also a translator of works by Gianni Rodari, Dr. Seuss, Christina Rossetti, Jack London. The meeting «A Millionbillionwillion Miles» was attended by students of the Higher School of Russian and Foreign Philology named after Leo Tolstoy. The speech of Maria Mikhailovna Lukashkina aroused keen interest among students and continued in a dialogue format. M.M. Lukashkina focused the students' attention on the peculiarities of literary translation, such as mandatory adherence to the style of a particular era, compliance with cultural characteristics, the ability to convey the specifics and problems of the text. At the end of the meeting  the students shared their first experience of working with literary texts.
