Yelabuga Institute, which will be in charge of the new addition, – School N 5 of Yelabuga – held a video conference for the school's employees on 16th May.

Starting the call, Director of the Yelabuga Institute Yelena Merzon noted, “Rector of Kazan Federal University Ilshat Gafurov and Head of Yelabuga Municipal Administration Rustem Nuriev agreed that the school will retain its territorial responsibilities and will continue to enroll kids from adjacent neighborhoods.”

Ms. Merzon and the educators then discussed plans for the school's further work from September 2020.

“Together, we will work out a development plan for the school, taking into account the university's resources to improve the quality of secondary education. We have projects to propose. We have to think about the continuity of secondary and higher education and the involvement of university teachers and students into the school's life and school teachers – into the university's life,” she said.

The school's new status will make it an experimental platform for innovative educational techniques and methodologies. As Rector Gafurov emphasized in his recent interview, Yelabuga Institute focuses on teacher education, and it should use its expertise to develop a standard local secondary school.

The schoolteachers then asked Ms. Merzon some questions about technical issues about their new labor contracts and conditions.

Kazan Federal University has so far had two in-house secondary schools – the Lobachevsky Lyceum and the IT Lyceum. Both of them have been consistently ranked among the top 100 schools in Russia. However, unlike School N 5 of Yelabuga, they don't provide the full 11-year curriculum and are not district schools (i. e., the enrolment is competition-based and not residence-based).
